OK, you really know how to flush out us lurkers.  Here's a possible  
solution to the Beebe mystery. His name was Lucius Beebe.  He was a  
columnist in New York during the late 20s and into the 30s, an elegant  
gentleman to whom everyone looked for taste and sartorial splendor.   
In the 30s, he became a radio personality and a role model for many,  
an articulate Cary Grant with a better pedigree.
