Steve (c: DJML)--
Thanks for posting that info about the video. I took a
look/listen at it, and recognized a couple of players.
The guy with the sax is Jon Doyle, who also plays clarinet (with
occasionally an Edmund Hall-like tone) in various bands around town
(in fact, i like his clarinet-playing better than his sax work, but
he's great on both). Other groups he also plays with include Aunt
Ruby's Sweet Jazz Babies and the Jazz Pharaohs (at the Elephant
Room). In January he sat next to Jim Cullum there (who had driven up
from San Antonio to sit in a couple of times), and Mr. Cullum seemed
to like his playing a lot. The guitar-player in the video with the
long white hair is Slim Richey, who is also in the Jazz Pharaohs
There are a lot of very talented musicians here in Austin, and
some of the younger ones (ahem) like this old stuff called hot jazz,
but they twist and spiral it a little to make it organic to their own
tastes. Very often their interpretations of our old standard
dixieland or popular songs will have a vitality, immediacy, and a
dance-ability that a lot of the older bands don't have.
The next concert hosted by the Austin Traditional Jazz Society
(http://www.atjs.org/) on April 20 will feature Aunt Ruby's Sweet
Jazz Babies (http://www.arsjb.com/), where Mr. Doyle goes by the
unlikely sobriquet of 'Tartan Purry'. Some other friends of mine are
in that band, such as an ace string-bass player named Ryan Gould, and
the leader, Ed Hayes ('Frank Lee Devine') on guitar. Together with
Dave Stoddard on valve 'bone, a bunch of us played at the ATJS jam
session in January, and had a great time.

>Ginny was talking about Austin TX and the musical scene there. Like,
>there are several young bands from Austin that play on the fringes
>of OKOM, yet are largely unknown by us old folks on the DJML.

>To see/hear one of the young, swing bands, playing courtesy of
>Lambert's, a joint in Austin, go to Barbone Street's My Space page,

>Kind of like Mighty Aphrodite, except they have a token male.

>In any event, the music swings, is played with humor, and the band

>we don't know about.
