Bill Watrous is a very talented player but he plays whisper quiet. He's all about the microphone. I remember him getting upset at the local college band director for not having a mic set up for his clinic. The clinic was set up in a band rehearsal room. Watrous was fine talking without a microphone but he wanted one for his playing.

Re Bill Watrous. I don't like that high-note doodling for which he is famous and which the kids prefer to hear. But a younger Bill Watrous playing the Nestico slow ballad "Samantha" is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. Sorry about the video quality:

It is true that Bill Watrous's performances frequently are presented with a mic utilized. His playing is so phenomenal that his preference for amplification is accepted without a thought {by other trombonist at least.)
