Many of us, I think, have the early 90s CD of what is considered the first stereo recording, at 33 1/3, by Ellington's Cotton Club Orch. It has been surmised that two simultaneous mono recordings were intended, to save time and cost, but from the nature of the trumpet solo's pan from one side to the next, in a perfect stereo arc, it can hardly be denied that it was meant as stereo, and LP, to boot.
