(Father) Al Lewis, who played banjo with some of the greatest New Orleans jazz
bands, died on Sunday at a hospital in Galliano, 40 miles south of New
Orleans, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was 87 years old.

The cause of death was not made public.

A big, imposing performer with a joyous personality, Mr. Lewis loved to
entertain as well as sing and play. At Preservation Hall here, where he
appeared frequently, he would surprise the crowd between numbers, handing out
trinkets like balloons and key chains.

Mr. Lewis worked with the band leader King Oliver early in his career and
later played with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the New Orleans
Joymakers. He said he picked up his nickname trying to copy the piano solos of
Earl (Fatha) Hines on the banjo.
