Steve Hoog touched briefly on it,  but this has been a mantra of mine for 
years. 
Here's the guiding principle: Drums  are a percussive reinforcement to the 
music around you. As a generality, if it's  not within the music around you, you 
or I, (the drummer), probably  shouldn't be playing it.
