Thanks to DJML Listmates Robert Calder, "ballen-ballend at deltapathology.com,
and Steve Barbone

For your informative and erudite comments. At "ballen's" suggestion, I have
ordered "Your Brain on Music" to

become further informed.

Here is a list of famous jazz musical non-readers so far. I hope you can
help me add to it.

Guitar-Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt

Reeds-Sidney Bechet, Roland Kirk ( special category as he was blind-
attended school for blind, but presumably played by ear)

Trumpet: Louis Armstrong initially. (learned to read well on joining Joe
Oliver's band in Chicago.)

Piano-Erroll Garner, Bix Beiderbecke ( initially Dave Brubeck-see extensive
previous correspondence. He subsequently became proficient reader.)

Blind pianists-a special category. George Shearing, I believe, read
Braille. Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles , presumably didn't read Braille
although Ray Charles, like Shearing, had attended a school for the blind.

Vocalists-hundreds of singers male and female too numerous to name
individually. Was Sinatra a reader?

Non-jazz category-operatic vocalist Pavarotti.

Thank you all for your comments. I look forward to your help in adding to
this list.

Your discussions put to rest the charge that DJML is " just idle
naval-gazing chatter!" (smile)
