There is a way to get the 48.5 cents a mile deduction for charity gigs.

1) Get paid for the gig, say $100.

2) Immediately donate $100 back to the charity via your check.

Eureka, it was a paid gig which qualifies for the full 48.5 cents a  
mile and the payment vs. donation is a wash.

Many performers donate their performance fees in this manner and  
that's why they do it.

If you buy a new car every 3 years, your actual costs of the car are  
more than 48 cents a mile in most cases. If Uncle Sam wants to cheat  
you out of more money by only allowing you 14 cents a mile, why not  
fight back?
