Thought I'd offer an unsolicited plug for Burt's book "Shakey And Me". I've been reading it a few pages at a time - I'm about 1/2 way through it, though it's not a long book.

It's an engaging, fun piece of reading and Burt does a good job of painting a picture of the events. It's written in a natural, informal style as if he were sitting on the back porch with you reminiscing. Interesting from a sociological aspect, it seems the chain was a creature of the era in which it evolved. Probably wouldn't happen the same way today.

Another good book along the same lines - i.e. telling the story of another iconic chain of eateries is the book written by Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy's - "Dave's Way". Besides Dave's personal story, it's interesting because Dave talks alot about Harlan Sanders, who Dave helped in getting the Kentucky Fried Chicken chain off the ground. One of the funny in an odd way points is the reason Dave gives as to why he and the Col. came to a parting of the ways, but I'll let you read the book.
