I said I would report back with any news about carrying my new trombone from
Chicago to Heathrow to Madrid on British Airways. No one, period, anywhere
within the airports or on the planes even looked at it. The hard case,
which is not one of those huge square ones, nor is it the skinny ones with
the bulge for the bell but an in between size, went through the scanners
just like it were a purse, shoes or coat...no interest. It fit perfectly in
the overhead bins on both flights, and in fact, if you put the case at the
back of the bin, others can put suitcases in front of it.

That is the experience I have always had over the years when travelling on
airplanes. The one suggestion I would make to anyone carrying a horn on
board a plane is to try to get to your seat as early as possible, so you can
be the first to get your things into the overhead bin. That is the only
moment where things could get complicated, but even then a polite question
to the stewardess about putting the horn in the first class closet will
normally be answered with a smile & a yes. Polite is the word throughout
the process.
