I always thought the IAJE stood for the International Association of
Jazz Educators.
They have not demised. Who are you writing about?

This is an unashamed commercial!

My biography of New Orleanian Kid Howard - trumpet man for many years
with
George Lewis - is now published by Jazzology Press of New Orleans and
included with it is a CD of previously unreleased tracks and an
interview
with the Lewis band.
The book was written with the help of Howard's family, his friends and
colleagues in New Orleans and also with the very great help of DJML
members
to whom I will be eternally grateful.
Copies are now available for purchase from the Jazzology web site and I
am
be able to supply a few copies directly to enthusiasts in Europe.
The book is a strictly limited edition and it's title - for the record -
is - "The Hottest Trumpet - The Kid Howard Story by Brian Harvey".
Thank-you - Brian Harvey

There is a new band in San Antonio, the Mission City Hot Rhythm Cats.
Here
is the personnel:

Mike Pittsley, trombone
Ed Torres, Drums
Mark Hess, Piano
David Jellema, cornet & clarinet

All of these guys have some association with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band
but
are not at present members of the band. Torres and Pittsley were with
the
JCJB for over 10 years each. Jellema is currently Jim's #1 sub at the
Landing and also on occasion plays with Jim. Mark Hess played trombone
and
piano with the JCJB way back in the 70s before Sheridan joined in 1979.

Here is their website:

http://www.missioncityjazz.com/

still under construction. I don't see any upcoming dates for the band,
but
watch the space, keep up with them, and you will be rewarded.

The Alamo City Jazz Band under the direction of Chuck Reilly is no
longer
playing, Chuck retired.

Besides the JCJB on the inside stage of the Landing, the outdoor
Riverwalk
patio features duos on week nights and trios and quartets on weekend
night,
no cover.

Mike, if you don't at least stick your head in the door and say hi, I'm
gonna be pissed.

A good friend of mine just came back this week from San Antonio and he
got
to sit in with Jim's band. He was impressed by the fine musicianship of

everyone there especially the clarinet player. My friend, Gary Dammer
is a
great jazzer himself and got a real kick out of sitting in.

Many of the
legendary players came up without school training. Perhaps we should
rethink how and why that happened and how we can enable it again.
__________________________________________________
I don't think that there was something magic in the water that produced
these guys. I think it was gigs. You learn your craft by doing it.
Almost
no one wants to sit in a room and practice. In the 1950's there were a
lot
of gigs and the restrictions on kids playing where there was alcohol was

very relaxed.

What has happened IMO is that the gigs where you could experiment and
learn
are simply gone for the most part but worse probably is that the step up

gigs are not there. What I mean is when I was in high school there were
a
lot of teen towns and church dances that we got easily along with some
wedding receptions. The step up gig was a club or more working pro band

gigs. It's not that they don't exist but there just aren't nearly as
many
available. It's also true that guys a little older than I had many more

opportunities than I did.

The teen gig for bands is almost nonexistent to the point that bands
can't
even make enough bucks to pay for their equipment. They for the most
part
hire DJ's

I guess the point is that all those gigs represented a school of sorts
and
that's where I think all that came from.

And in the really "old days," parading musicians would have young boys
carrying their instrument cases alongside the parade in exchange for a
music
lesson or just out of hero worship. The "second line."

Try to get a neighborhood parade organized now. You need a wheelbarrow
full
of money just for the permits (including bribes to the permit writing
officials).

And when is the last time a side musician in a band had a student on the

stand with him to learn how the real world works? That's what my teacher
did
for me - the leader trusted him (and me) to give me good instructions
and to
keep me out of the way of the real members of the band.

Hi all,

I will be making a 4 day trip to Bermuda at the end of May.

Does anyone know of venues where I might find some good live
Dixieland/jazz/swing?

I wouldn't mind singing a few tunes with a band that might be playing
there.....

Thanks,

Barbara from

"And when is the last time a side musician in a band had a student on

Avraham Felder of our Isradixie Band, and a jazz educator, does this
all the time (which does not mean everytime his band's playing).
He also organizes gigs for the bands he coaches.
Cheers

Correct website is:

Sorry about that.

BTW, note their calendar for Apr 27. Seems like a natural venue for
some swinging Dixieland.

"Once a month, jazz enthusiasts come out to enjoy authentic jazz music
from the '20s - '50s to support and appreciate our fantastic local
