Of course Jelly Roll Morton did sing about the young woman "out on the levee doin the doggone twist" and I have a memory of Humphrey Lyttelton and the late Peter Clayton on the radio puzzling over a new Johnny Hodges recording (long ago, now!) with Wild Bill Davis, after playing a track whose theme seemed familiar to them.
It was "Let's Twist Again" but for a few notes which got in the way of melodic flow and expressive economy and swing. He took it and he improved it. I can't remember what he called it.
