You have hit on the biggest nugget of "all what is Jazz, where did it  
come from,"  at least as most of us on this list have gone round and  
round it. There are countless books and articles, pontificators and  
postulates on all sides of this very controversial  subject!

I suggest that you visit the website redhotjazz.com for a start - New  
Orleans may, or may not have been the first place it started, black  
(or white) musicians may or may not have invented jazz, and what in  
the heck does "jazz" mean, anyway?

Have fun with your research ;-)  I am sure you will find all sorts of  
interesting facts along the way...
