[Dixielandjazz] vibrato

What we (the list) are referring to as Bechet's vibrato is a major
characteristic of French music on the whole.  You hear it in singers like
Edith Piaf and even Jacques Brel, etc.

The question is did his many years in France cause Bechet to play that way
or did Bechet's fame in France cause that vibrato style to become a
nationalist norm.

Any ideas?
