re:  mic down the tuba bell....
if a funk sound is what's needed, yep, that's the way with a tuba.  But I 
will, and have, walk out on a player that willingly mics that way in 
non-funk settings.  That's not a tuba sound I want to hear.  It comes off as 
a half-sound...all lows frequency, nothing to make the beautiful sound.   
hmmmm...maybe that's part of the reason for eating the mic????
