Some recent publicity:
The Buck Creek Jazz Band was formed in 1977.. The band is made up of seven
musicians who play in the style of Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and other
early New Orleans musicians. Their intention is not to copy the sound of
these early musical pioneers but to apply their instrumentation and
techniques to a variety of tunes that span the Twentieth Century.
The band has appeared at every major traditional festival in this country,
including the Kool Jazz Festival in Washington, D.C. and the Sacramento Jazz
Jubilee in California. Outside their native country they have played the
Victoria (British Columbia) Jazz Festival and the Edinburgh, Scotland
Festival. They have been featured on jazz cruises in the Caribbean, the
Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, Panama Canal, Alaska and the St. Lawrence
Seaway.
They have recorded eighteen albums and CDâ?Ts over the past twenty years and
they have received three Whammy Awards (Washington Area Music Awards)
including one for the Best Jazz Group.
In 2000 they were voted by readers of the American Rag as one of the five
best traditional jazz bands in the country today.
