 Hi Bob,

We just bot 500 bubble lined mailers from a company called Nationwide
Envelope at 1347 Jamike Lane in Erlanger KY, 41018. It was about $150 for
500. They come in boxes of 250 and are #0 size. Rob

Bob -

Try computer stores. It depends on what you have where you are, e.g., you
probably have Fry's Electronics there, but they are not in the DC area.

I just bought a box of 100 paper cd envelope/jackets at the new MicroCenter
store in Rockville, MD. (I needed to burn the cd's for
CentOS-5 Linux and needed something to put them in.) They also had bulk
jewel cases there.

If you want regular boxes to send multiple CD's in, there is a place here
called The Container Store that sells all kinds of boxes. I think it is a
chain, but I don't know where else they have stores. I never looked for
boxes sized to take multiple cd jewel cases, but I wouldn't be surprised if
they had them.

If you are sending them out a few at a time, I would tend to use the bubble
pack envelopes. They might be cheapest at Office Depot, but I would look
for them at well-stocked computer stores as well.

Hi Bob:

I get my CD mailers in bulk at "Staples" a chain office supply store, or my
local office supply store, Rubensteins. Use #0 padded mailer which will
accommodate 1 or 2 CDs. Cost is less than 35 cents each, can't remember
exactly, having bought a case a couple of months ago.

But cost is really insignificant since it is factored into my CD selling
price. At local Record Stores, College Bookstores, CD Baby, Jazz Society
sales tables, etc., my CDs sell for $14.97. I sell them a gigs for $15.

On my own mail orders, I sell them for $15 + $2.50 shipping & handling.
Since the shipping is less than $1.50, and the mailer cost is less than 35
cents and the post office picks up my mail at my RDF mailbox, the mailer
cost is a non-issue.

And when I ship in Bulk to CD Baby and other resellers, I just cut down the
30 count box I got them in to 10 and re-tape it.

Cheers,
Steve Barbone

As an Ebay dealer, I've found the best supply place (good materials, great
prices, quick shipping and nice to deal with) to be

They give the Record Guild people a 10% discount (but you have to remind

As a nightclub owner, I hired a pianist and a drummer to
entertain my customers. After several performances, I
discovered the drummer had walked away with some of my
valuables. I notified police, who arrested him.

Desperate for another drummer, I called a friend who knew
some musicians. "What happened to the drummer you had?"
he asked me.

"I had him arrested," I replied.

My friend paused for a second and asked, "How badly did he
play?"

Steve wrote:

Dunno where you got that from! I said the music was "all important", and I
will always try not to "disturb" the music for precision's sake. I can play
heavily arranged music (as you put it), but certainly don't do that with my
band, either. But, back to recording.......

For example, there is a fine line to be drawn when removing flaws. Digital
pops in a poor recording can quite often happen in groups. If you have 3
clicks in a small time frame, removing one of them can render the other two
almost unnoticeable. They're still there, but the mind doesn't seem to pay
attention, so you don't have to remove all of them. Put the third one back
in & you hear all 3! I'm talking about removing in a scale of nano seconds,
before anyone thinks about huge holes!

As I said, if one doesn't know what can be done, then one shouldn't make an
opinion.
Of these recordings you speak, it is impossible to say how much treatment
went on in post production, so one shouldn't assume there wasn't any done.

I once said to some big shots at Warner Music when they received my invoice
for a large amount of money for a post production job: "if you can hear
what I've done on the recording, then I haven't done it well"!

Steve continues:
>So I don't mind mistakes and actually prefer to hear them. One wrong
>note
in a Basie/Sinatra recording isn't going to bother me one bit.

I'll bet it just killed the poor trombonist that honked that note everytime
he hears/heard it! I know I feel for him each time I listen to it. :>

Bob Ringwald,

I listened to your stuff on cdbaby yesterday. Very nice! I will look for
you all in Sacramento next year. It will be the first time for all of us
Wildcats at that festival. I have been a fan of Molly's for years and was
surprised when reading her bio that she did the West Coast Annie tour. What
year was that? I saw it in Los Angeles and she may have been starring.
That was a long time ago!

See you in Sacramento. Who else on this list will be there? Rob

Here's a note I received from Roger Wade which I hope he won't mind my

Hi Steve,

Just wanted to share one of my favorite versions of "Just a Closer Walk With
Thee" with you.? Here is a link to an mp3 of it:

http://home.comcast.net/~rwade19474/JustaCloserWalkWithThee.mp3

I get a kick out of the use of the organ, only on this track; it was the
band's theme song.

The band is Dick Creeden's Jazz Band, recorded about 1960.? The bass player,
Wally Livingston, was a lifelong friend of my father's from grade school
days.? He was the bass player on Edmond Hall's last recording, on Jazzology.

The band played a regular gig for years at the Village Green in Danvers, MA
north of Boston.? I remember when Wally called my dad and told him they had
made a record and where he could buy it.? We went right out and got it.?
Recently I found a clean copy of the album and transferred it into digital
format.

The clarinetist, Stan Monteiro, played some nice low register clarinet on
this track and on some others.? He later went west and became a high level
executive at Columbia records.? I know he recorded a few times, once with
Yank Lawson, so he was definitely no slouch.

The leader Dick Creeden played some fine trumpet, reminiscent of Bobby
Hackett but not a copycat.? Trombonist was Cas Brosky, drummer Dave Markell,
and pianist Bob Pilsbury, later and still with the New Black Eagle Jazz
Band.

Though I was only in high school I got to see them a few times with my
folks, once when Hackett was the guest artist, another time with Teddy
Wilson.? Great memories.? Most of these guys are gone now, including Wally
about 3 years ago

I hope you enjoy it.

Best regards,

Roger

Steve,

We already have the technology to do what you are afraid of. The irony is
that "perfect" does not sound right to our ears. It comes out flat, or
emotionless. I have made two banjo CDs one track at a time, many with full
synthesized orchestral accompaniment. The recording process is every bit as
artistic as the playing. My band cds are recorded live in the studio and
they still require many hours of mixing. I enjoy studio recordings myself.
It's still garbage in garbage out, though. Rob

Steve wrote (at the end of a long tirade!):
>IMO: There is a huge untapped demand for tuneful music out there. No
>doubt
other bands experience that latent appreciation also when playing to the
great masses of jazz oblivious people out there.

That is so true! There is a huge interest when the "masses" hear "our"
music. We have a different situation, naturally, in Europe, and don't have
to fight so hard to be heard. But, the fact remains when people, not jazz
fans but just people, hear OKOM...they love it.

Here it is assumed that you must be an intellectual to understand Jazz, and
it's a shocker to a lot of people that they can just tap their feet & smile
to have a good time with the music we play. It's enjoyable to see the light
come on in their faces.

Of course, we don't sit down in chairs on stage, or hide behind music
stands. We're "right with the audience", and they can't help but get
involved.

Cas Brodsky used to fill in for Stan Vincent with the Black Eagles. He was
a great musician. He used to do a parody of "I Can't Give You Anything But
Love" called "I Can Give You Anything But Love." He brought the house down.
