Joe Hopkins wrote.............I have read several places that most musicians
who stayed in N.O. after the district was shut down never recorded because
there were no recording studios in New Orleans at that time.

If so, when were the first recordings done in New Orleans?

---------------

A mobile Okeh unit set up shop in the offices of the Kimball Piano Co., at
123 Carondelet early in 1924.
They recorded virtually non-stop over three days and four of the five bands
represented were white.
This information is from the liner note to Timeless Jazz CD ref CBC (Chris
Barber Collection) 1-014 which includes 24 tracks made in the city between
1924 and 1925. The bands included are those of Johnny De Droit, Fata
Marable, the Original Crescent City Jazzers (Stirling Bose), Johnny
Bayersdorfer, the Halfway House Orchestra, John Tobin, Anthony (sic)
Parenti, the Original New Orleans Rhythm Kings and the Original Tuxedo
Orchestra (they compare favourably with the King Oliver band and also has a
two cornet lead!).
This is a very fine CD - well worth owning - and the highly erudite liner
note is by the late Richard Sudhalter.
