I was just reading about the song "Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight"  
that was obviously very popular in the 1890s onward (the original  
lyrics were much more graphic ;-) - anyway, Teddy Roosevelt was asked  
to compile a list of songs the troops sang in the Spanish American  
War and he deliberately left that song off the list, saying "That's  
not music - it's ragtime."
