Contrary to popular myth, many early jazz musicians COULD read, or at
least "spell," the term used for someone who could read in a rudimentary
way. Even Buddy Bolden could read, at least a little.

A band that couldn't play popular music of the day had little chance of
playing any type of engagement. So if no one in the band could read, they
would lose out on lucrative gigs. So at least someone in the band needed
to read.

Cheers,
Chris Tyle
