Not quite acurate. gzip files are just compressed files like .zip
files. It has its roots in the UNIX world, but was invented by
the Free Software Foundation under the GNU project to
avoid the cost of licencing the zip format.

PC programs like WinZip will read gzip files. So they are
compatible across platforms. So you might want to
download the gzipped version as it is smaller and will
be faster to download. Then you can unzip it and use it
just like one of the txt files.
