I remember hearing that Woody Herman wanted Windhurst to go with him, but it fell through because he couldn't read. That must have been about 1955. I have some great old films of jam sessions, now on DVD, in which Johnny plays with d'Amico, Hawk, Morey Feld and others. Tom Gleason
