What you may want is a banner. Most sign shops can print on canvas like
material. The only problem with it is getting it to hang straight so a
pocket needs to be sewn in the bottom to house a steel rod or pipe to make
it hold straight. A similar pocket in the top (folded over the stand about
a foot or so) can house a bungee cord to wrap around the stand and hook to
hold it. Mike Brooks had some similar banners made up for the AF band for
their 50th anniversary to hang from Herald Trumpets. They had gold bound
edges and looked good. There isn't any reason that you couldn't do the same
thing off the front of a stand. I have never used this kind of front
because it's hard to keep banners or any kind of cloth free of wrinkles and
getting it to hang out straight. That's why I prefer a rigid sign
I make a sign for Manhasset stands that is about 21 wide x 24 tall. Folded
in half on the corrugations it makes a good sign that is held on by the
weight of the book or by the lamp clip. I remove about 4 of the
corrugations so it will hang right and cut a square hole in the corrugations
about 1" square to pass a light clamp through. I have made several of
these for my friends here. They fold flat and weigh almost nothing. They
can be made to be full height of the stand if you want. The sign hanging
off the front of the stand is 21 x 14 with 10" on the music side of the
stand. No clips no bungees but some Velcro would be a good addition to keep
the thing from sliding around.
Right now I don't have any photos of the signs but they are easy to make and
any sign shop can make them for you. I can get some photos of them next
week if you are interested or I can send you a diagram on how they are made.
Too bad I didn't see this - I could have taken photos last night for you.
The other alternative is to get a corrugated stand from Mike Brooks
www.embeeideas.com he has recently upgraded his technology and can do some
really sharp stuff.
There are sign shops that can directly print on stiff plastic like
corrugated plastic or expanded foam board. It's really sharp looking.
There may be a shop near you than can do this.
