Actually that should be more a '70's figure since it was the Weems
recoding form the '30's that was revised ad made the hit in the post
war 50's. I know, because my dad was in the sax section on the
recording. By the way, the hit was the second recording by Weems of the
tune, however - it was the second time that had the charm.
Great drumming by Orm Downes, and of course Tanner's whistling. The band
played it as a "stretcher' for radio shows, becaue the chart was made so
it could be played as long or short as needed.
I played in the band in the '50's -- a second generation to play that
tne in my family. Jak Hanna was onthe band for part of my stay.
Many folks thought it was his theme song, but it was not. A lovely song
called "Out of the Night" was the Weems theme song -- though in the
revival period, most people just assumed that Heartaches was the theme.
At the time the record was made, the band had dad, plus Rosey McHargue,
"Bones" O'Brien on Piano, and Country Washburn as the resident jazzers,
and the band could play hot when it wasn't being a launching pad for
Perry Como and Marvel Maxwell -- later to star in movies as Marilyn Maxwell.
One of the great Midwest commercial bands, it was a family band, and
most people stayed on for years -- my dad from '31 to '41. You don't see
that kind of longevity in this age. But then, where's the work?
Regards,
Don Ingle
