Subject: [Dixielandjazz] gangster songs/tunes

"The Jazz Baby" in The Bootleggers and Their Era.(Kenneth Alsop, Doubleday,
1962), and "The Jazz Age " in Al Capone. The Man and the Era (Lawrence
Bergreen, Touchstone ,1996), describe the jazz scene in Chicago during
Prohibition. The chapter on "Jam sessions, gangsters, speakeasies, recording
sessions, more musicians, and then-the Chicago decline" in Hear Me Talkin'
to Ya (Nat Shapiro and Nat Hentoff, Dover Books, 1966) gives first-hand
accounts by some of the jazz musicians in Chicago at that time. Wait Until
Dark. Jazz and the Underworld. 1880-1940. (Donald L. Morris, Bowling Green
University Popular Press, 1980), is a complete summary of the seamy side of
jazz.

>From the fist of these books:"Many of the jazz pieces of that period
commemorate the sleazy setting in which they were born--Friar s Point
Shuffle, Chicago Stomp Down...Sunset Cafe Stomp...Royal Garden Blues."
What are the odds for the All Blacks and the WorldCup?! Cheers. Fred
