How did he compare with Bob Helm, who supposedly carried the title of
Loudest Clarinet Player in the World?,

He was louder!  He could "screech" much, much louder than our trumpeter.
Although, I've never been on the stand with Helm, and I was right next to
Tony every nite.  
  
A very, very driving clarinet.  However, remember I mentioned those lovely
contrasts in the low register.  It's all in the contrasts.
