Hi Listees,
David Dustin wrote "Circa 1994, the Canadian comic strip ?For Better Or For Worse? featured a
brief story line with the kindly grandfather character discovering a horn in
a pawnshop (I believe it was identified as a Martin Committee) that he
determined had been the one stolen from Berigan back in the day. ..."
Actually the strip was titled "Crankshaft" by two Ohio cartoonists Batiuk and Ayers. It ran for about 4 weeks and detailed one of the characters playing trumpet in front of a radio while listening to Berigan broadcasts. It followed with him finally going to NY and being invited to 'sit in' with the band. It was a long story thread involving the mob, getting beaten for getting too close to the boss's girlfriend, and finally returning home. Return to present, he is teaching his grandson about Berigan and making plans to go to Fox Lake for the annual Berigan festival (Soon coming up, BTW). The final few panels have the characater Ralph "Soda" Meckling playing "I Can't Get Started" at the festival, and Ralph and his grandson standing in front of Bunny's stone inscribed: "Bernard "Bunny" Berigan 1908-1942).
I clipped most of the strips, but haven't been able to locate what I'm missing. A wonderful read, and highly unusual for something like this to appear in the syndicated press. (www.uexpress.com) Does anyone else besides Dave remember this?
    Regards, Charlie Coleman
