That's a common misconception among folks who don't realize just how much
jazz there is in NYC at any given time. There would have been PLENTY of good
OKOM at places like Arthur's Tavern, Iridium, or The Donnell branch of the
NY Public Library, or many other venues. Legends like Les Paul, Sol Yaged
and others can be seen every week along with Dixieland Bands.
Even Woody Allen is there weekly when not touring. :-) VBG
As for jazz itself in NYC during that time, the JVC JAZZ FESTIVAL was in
progress. This is a 2 week multi venue event that features the very top jazz
musicians worldwide. HUGE event, HUGE jazz talent all over the city, HUGE
profit for the organizers. Plus ongoing Lincoln Center Jazz events.
Poor NYC. It gets no respect from many on the DJML yet is unquestionably The
Jazz Capitol of the World. What would Elkhart be, without those NYC musos?
