Playing jazz is a lot like having sex in public - not everyone can or wants
to do it that way. It takes a certain leap of faith.
I should have added - or really drunk but the analogy does still hold.
There are Jazzers who can't play without a couple of drinks or other
products and there was a period of time when musicians thought that drugs
enhanced their performance and maybe in some circles still do.
