Dear Bob,
Porter Steele's "High Society" may have been written earlier (1901,
recorded 1911), but as "High Society Rag" (melody by Joseph Oliver,
arranged Lil Harding [sic]) it was copyrighted on 11 August 1923 and
then again as "High Society" on 13 May 1929 by AJ Piron-Clarence
Williams -arr. Clarence Williams through Clarence Williams Music
Publishing Co. Therefore, I suggest that it would not be in the Public
Domain.
The full story should be in the DJML archive, as we discussed this some
years back.
"The Curse of An Aching Heart" (1913. Al Piantadosi, music-Henry Fink,
lyrics) is listed on the 'Public Domain' website.
Kind regards,
Bill.
