[Dixielandjazz] Jams at Sacto

Hello Kay,
You wrote me on May 6th, and I've only now read your letter - at the
time I was too busy for DJML, and afterwards I started backwards.
Anyway, although I was disappointed with the number of jam sessions,
the only festival where I saw regular jam sessions was Breda (The
Netherlands), and there the jam sessions were not open to everybody -
one needed a badge, but just had to ask the doorman (one time I stayed
at the hotel where they were held, so I didn't need one). But many of
the best musicians played at the jam sessions (many of them were
guests at that hotel).
Many years ago, there was a jam session stage in Edinburgh, and there
one really had no idea what to expect! There were nights when hardly
any jammers showed up, and nights when there were too many.
Once a funny scene occurred - no idea whether spontanid or
pre-planned. Warren Vache was playing; then John Lukasik arrived,
and, for whatever reason, threw a broccoli at Warren. The latter
caught it and used it as mute, each side for differnet effects, with
excellent results!
Cheers

The jams are well attended, particularly by upcoming youth musicians. Many of the "older" youth musicians who are involved as counselors at the Sacramento Jazz Camp participate. It is less of a site for the more experienced musicians to come to, although many music educators that are also in bands, make a point of being there at least one evening. Howard Miyata and Polly Edgerton come to mind.

Hotels and playing locations are very spread out. Musicians more frequently sit in with one another's bands that are performing on the official schedule, if they are so inclined. Makes it more interesting for the audience as well.
