Interesting article Bob. My 2 cents is that the black/white issue in jazz
swings back and forth like a pendulum. For example;

Marsalis gets flack for not hiring enough white musicians.

Ken Burns gets flack for being too black oriented.

Jazz historians touting black jazz roots, evoke a response from Richard
Sudhalter who writes a book about White contributions to jazz.

Now Yoshi gets flack for omitting Blacks musicians on her anniversary CD.

And the Berkeley Jazz Festival gets similar flack.

Back and forth goes the pendulum like it does on most issues. Usually the
fans are the ones who get the most upset.
