Octaves are good ear training, also,
to help you play in tune.

This is really important on the woodwinds too especially sax where there 
must be a change in embouchure to tune the upper register.  Failing to do 
this is why a lot of clarinet players play flat in the higher registers and 
sax players play sharp.
