Some of you DJML'ers in N. California might remember John Scott...he started the Apex Jazz Band.
John W. Scott
Services were held for John W. Scott, a former resident of Scotts Valley who died June 13 in Albany, Ore. He was 79.
Mr. Scott was born in San Francisco in 1928 and was raised in Alameda. He joined the Merchant Marines at age 17. He later joined the U.S. Marines and in 1950 served in Korea, where he was a member of the "Chosen Few" - survivors of the Battle of the Chosen Reservoir.
He married in 1949 and had three sons. After his military service he graduated from San Jose State and then he taught school for the Union School District in San Jose from 1958 until he retired in 1984.
Mr. Scott loved to play the trumpet and was involved with a number of Dixieland Jazz bands throughout the Bay Area for years, including the Apex Jazz Band, which he formed.
He enjoyed his retirement in Albany with wife Gemma and their two children.
Survivors include sons Beau and William "Wes" Scott and David Scott.
His son Adam died previously.
Mr. Scott was buried with full military honors at the Willamette Military Cemetery in Portland, Ore.
