When a Romanian folk dance troupe appeared on the local concert series in our 
town about 20 years ago, they had about a 12 man   musical group playing the 
Romanian folk music for the dancers.   The two violin players had those 
violins with the horns.   They were full bodied violins, though, with the addition 
of the horns which I assume amplified the sound somewhat.   That was the first 
and only time I've ever seen them.   In Romania, than at least, they were 
available and being used.
