When I got out of the navy in 1961 one of the first gigs I played was
subbing on the Frankie Laine Show as he did a concert in Bakersfield.
They had an afternoon rehearsal and the musical director kicked off the
tune at about 250 beats per and until I realized that we were in two,
it kicked my butt. Figured it out, made amends and enjoyed the show
both as a player and as a listener. Had a real appreciation for
Frankie Laine after that.
