[Dixielandjazz] Bird horns and building bands

yep, the auction was $140,000...and Cleaver got no end of hell for that 
price.

Apparently it was a good deal for Parker to have that horn, since no one 
would pawn it for him, and he could still play to get cash to get his good 
horn out.  According to Red Rodney, Bird hated it so much he finally found 
other things to pawn.  Clint Eastwood's movie "Bird" is great, BTW.

As far as building a band, one suggestion:  is there a college nearby you 
that has any kind of a jazz program?  If you can teach the style to some 
'cool' college age players, there's all that much more life to OKOM.  Maybe 
there's a guitar player who will play banjo using guitar tunings, it's not 
perfect but better than nothing.  Or, a tenor guitar?  There will be some 
who will laugh at the idea of playing that old crap, but the better ones, 
the ones who really stand a chance of making it as a professional of any 
kind, should jump at the chance to learn the style and tunes.
