Bob,

My trombone has five moving parts:
1) The slide for changing a Bb instrument progressively to an A instrument,
to an Ab instrument, to a G instrument, and so on;
2) The tuning slide for bringing the original Bb in tune with the other
(usually out-of-tune) instruments;
3) The locking screw to prevent curious people from dropping the slide;
4) The joining screw to hold the two halves of the instrument securely in
position;
5) The spit valve.

Although basically a Bb instrument with the slide in the innermost position,
the D above middle Bb has to be adjusted by the slide by about a ½ cm, and
the F above Bb has to be adjusted by about 1 cm.
In addtion, the G above middle Bb is best obtained with the slide about 3-4
cm out instead of the 4th position at about 25 cm out.
To get the D above bottom Bb the slide has to be moved to the 4th position.

Aren't guitars and banjos the easiest with no moving parts once somebody has
tuned them for the student player?

Cheers

Bob Smith
