[Dixielandjazz] Crosley Phonos styli

The thorn/cactus/steel needle method is a whole different ball of wax,
especially for early recordings. The grit in the record was designed to
form the needle to the groove, giving each a custom shape and the most
contact area over which to spread the weight of the pick up.

 Even within 78s the size
of a stylus that best plays back a record depends on the era of the
recording, sometimes on the company doing the recording, and also on the
degree of wear. >

Gosh,
some of you guys sure are picky. I used to play mine with a hawthorn needle

plucked out of the garden hedge.

Cheers
