Now I understand what Elazar meant by "Rehearsing in front of an audience."
He is not really rehearsing. What he is doing is keeping the guys sharp by
playing in front of an audience.
Where he lives, the way he is promoting the band is working for him . . .
going out and playing on the streets, or in various places where people are
gathering.
While playing for free or cheaply is not a good thing usually, often the
pros do this in clubs just to keep sharp. It is very common in NY to play a
small little club regularly in-between the good paying gigs or tours, just
to keep your chops up. It also does what happens to Elazar, gets you gigs
from people hearing you and wanting to hire you for their party.
When I lived in Los Angeles, my Great Pacific JB always had a Sunday night
gig. When I needed a sub, I could always call some of the best OKOM players
in town, Dick Cathcart, Morty Corb, Abe Most, Dick Carey, etc.
