A front line chorus is by no means a fugue, technically speaking.  A fugue might sound, to a listener, like a multi-voiced cacophony, but there is a lot more structure to it, including the most important which is imitation.  

I guess I can understand the comparison, though.  There is a section of most fugues where the "melody" line is passed back and forth and the other voices are playing seemingly non-thematic material.  Still, it doesn't relate to the melody/obligatto/decorated bass cum obligatto that a front-line jam would have.

"Hot 3" is another term, if banjo and piano are left out.  Or, just "Front Line" or "Horns  Only".
