[Dixielandjazz] What Instruments should be used for Trad Jazz? (or Fugues)

I guess if "traditional" means a form, that's one way to view it.
If one believes it is a style, that's a different question.
I vividly remember Bobby Quaile (cl & sax - Philly area) playing a  
great piccolo solo on a trad gig at Showboat, and on another occasion  
playing a damn fine solo on the oboe during "Sheik of Araby". If he  
ever brings along his bassoon or his WX-7, I'll wet myself laughing,  
fer sure!
There are probably as many opinions about this question as there are  
players, because music always evolves.
