Dear Listmates- Re 6 string banjo: I passed the entire DJML discussion to
my friend Art Carnrick, performing as "Arturo." He's a classical and jazz
guitarist in our Pensacola area. Sometimes he brings out his six string
banjo and impresses me and the audience.
Here are his comments which he suggested might be passed along to this
distinguished and erudite list of OKOM enthusiasts:
Thanks for the latest chatter regarding the 6 string banjo. I had and have
had great luck with the guitjo. Since I'm not a member of the mail list,
you can pass on my "secrets"...
1. Greg Deering has gotten a great sound with the D6, other models don't
measure up
2. Use extremely light gauge guitar strings to get a more "banjo" /
"cutting" sound
3. Don't just chord or play "plectrum" style. Play "fingerstyle" like a
banjo player. I use "alaska" picks.
4. Capo a lot. As an example, F sounds much better in 5th position playing
"C" fingerings with a capo than in 1st position playing "E" fingerings.
