Of course, those who think Coltrane, Rollins, Dizzy, Stitt, Dexter Gordon
and Herbie Mann just play noise would disagree>>

Hi Steve,
Yes, we would. I am afraid I am a Philistine. I have tried, I really have,
and I have the almost unplayed CD`s to prove it. With the exception of a few
tunes, none of which I could name off hand, I just cannot for the life of me
see ( or hear) what it is that makes these guys `great`..

I can appreciate that it is very clever, both technically and musically and
no doubt dragging the `flattened fifth` into music which had gone around the
7ths and diminished chords interminably for 50 years was the introduction to
the use of more and more complicated chords. That altered the comparatively
simple chord changes everyone was used to irrevocably and opened the
floodgates to `modern` jazz.. I just don`t like the result.

But then, who is going to agree with me?. What do I know, I am a drummer not
a real musician and I think Maynard Ferguson should have been hung for
treating a beautiful instrument like a trumpet in such a manner. If he
wanted to make a sound that high, buy a piccolo.

Having nailed my colours to the mast I will now wait quietly ,like Abigail,
for the contumely which will no doubt be rained upon my innocent head and
the accusations that I always denigrate everything.

Boo Hoo :-)
