As mentioned earlier, Vince had gone to the Lu/Turk style 100% (which is
fine!). Nevertheless, he was very excited & happy to listen & enjoy our
band. We're loud, driving, non-style orientated, but this didn't bother
someone who you would assume to be very much a limited style listener. Not
so! One can enjoy all styles of music, just as Vince did with us, by the
use of several criteria....is it well played & performed, did your feet want
to move, did you have fun listening, etc.?
After attending the 50th Anniversary of the South Frisco Band a few months
ago and reading the history, I had only been a follower since the late 70's so
rather a new comer, I was amazed at all the musicians who had been a part of
that band before I knew of it. I, of course love the historic style of the
band but I think most musicians and followers of OKOM, learn to love all the
styles. We of course have our favorites but I have always said that any music,
played well, is worth listening.
I first heard what is called the "West Coast" Style when I heard the Natural
Gas Band in Monterey (and became a big fan of that band) and was blessed to
hear the Turk Murphy band at Earthquake Magoons before it was shut down but I
would give anything to have found this music 20 years before I did. There is
just not enough of it around here anymore.
