Shalom Tom and listmates,

Actually, at the jam session I was not entirely denied a chance to perform.
When I first pulled my horn out, the stage manager told me that the jam was
only for festival musicians. When I told him that a) that's not what the
signs said that were plastered all over town, and b) that I lead a Dixieland
band in Jerusalem, and c) that I was there with the guys from the
Ambassadors of New Orleans, he thought a moment, then sort of grudgingly
said, "Well, OK, go on up (on stage) if you want to." I told him I don't
play modern jazz, and asked if there was going to be any New Orleans style
jazz on the program. He said, "we'll see," which I should know by now means
"NO!" I hung around back stage with horn in hand for about an hour, and
since I was being ignored, and they were still blathering the same song as
when I took my horn out an hour earlier (well it sounded like that, anyway),
I opted to put the horn away and just hang out with the guys.

So, Tom, what I would have really loved would have been a chance to jam with
you guys. Steve Barbone gave me a momentary scare when he asked if I was
going to play with them on stage at the festival. Well, Steve, I'd have done
it, nervous or not, and I'd have been OK, even with my old beat up Olds
marching (valve) bone that I got for $100, that is one of the best horns I
have in my arsenal. Unfortunately, while all the Ambassadors are terrific
guys with whom I felt completely at home and comfortable, there were indeed
contractual issues and such that did not let that happen. Next time. And
Tom, there had better be a next time!

Seriously folks, I've been telling you for ten years that Israel is worth a
visit, that I will go out of my way to meet visitors, show you around, and
arrange memorable if not paying opportunities to play. Everything the guys
are saying about their experience here is 100% true, and then some. Maybe
now you'll believe them, and me, and come give us a try. I'll leave the
light on for you...

It was also a shame that the guy running the Festival Jam session would
not let our esteemed friend list mate and colleague Elazar Brandt sit
in at the Jam session, I was not aware of this situation or I would
have made it happen, so very sorry Elazar, and it was a pleasure to
finally meet you and hang out. Had I known the circumstances of you
being denied, to that jam session bandstand I could and certainly
would have corrected it to make it happen, you could have had my Badge
if that is what the co-ordinator wanted to see. I personally hate to
see the local guys who work hard every day of the year to make music be
denied a chance to participate with the strangers from afar. It just
ain't right. If I am invited back next year I will alter that
situation I assure you, and all indications are that we will be invited
back.
