Agreed, Cees, but would add that gimmicks are fine, as long as you add in
the second part of your sentence "play your heart out".  Gimmicks catch the
people, draw their attention to the music.  No harm in that, as long as
you're someone that can pull the gimmicks off well.  Gimmicks in place of
the musicianship is a no-no.
