Ingemar asks this question, which really still hasn't been answered here:

Several people have said it's the same tune as What a Friend We Have in
Jesus, but it is not; it's similar to that one, but there are some big
melodic differences.

Neither is it the hymn proposed by Mike Logsdon:

So what is it?
