Dear Steve and Tom,
It is not only casino managers who mismanage music.
I sadly recall halycon days before the New South Wales (Australia) state
government legislated poker machines in pubs for their big business mates,
thereby sounding the death knell for all forms of live music in hotels here.
On several pub jobs our band was packing the customers in and the publican
had to hire additional bar staff to cater for the enthusiastic patrons.
The extra-staff costs exceeded the increased bar sales, so they retrenched
the band as an initial cost-saving exercise.
"Go figure", as you Ermerikans say.
In Australia it is considered mandatory that publicans go to Idiot Skool
before they are given any hotel license.
