Celery Stalks At Midnight was a big hit for the Wll Bradley Orchestra
featuring Ray McKinley. The only vocal on it were the words "Celery
stalks along the highway" delivered in a falsetto style by, I think, Ray
McKinley, in much the same manner as "oh play that thing" or similar
vocal interjections have been used in other songs. Ray is not a black
musician, however, so perhaps you are looking for a different rendition.
